20 Things Every Twentysomething Should Know How to Do

twentysomethings

First things first, most ‘twentysomethings’ are too hard on themselves.

It’s one of the downsides of a youth-obsessed culture. We tend to think if we haven’t published our first book, planted our first church or gotten married by the time we’re 30, then we’re on the fast track for a lonely, penniless death which will be mourned by none. Sure, some people get famous when they turn 25. Some people also swim across the English Channel.

Your twenties are a prime time to explore and grow, without all the baggage that comes with settling down and making your mark. (Jesus Himself was an unknown carpenter in a reviled corner of Israel until He was 30.)

That said, there are a few things every twentysomething should know how to do.

Your twenties are a prime time to explore and grow, without all the baggage that comes with settling down and making your mark.

1. Make a Great Breakfast

Ideally, you should be able to craft a great meal for any occasion, but this is the most important meal of the day and so, it’s the one you should have down. Use real butter, large eggs, fresh mushrooms, cheese, whatever, but know the ins and outs and invite a lot of people over to eat it with you regularly.

2. Argue Kindly

An increasingly rare trait, but you’ll be better for it. Learn how to have your own opinions (and make sure they’re actually yours—not just something you “heard somewhere”) and how to put them firmly and politely, in a way that invites spirited conversation. It’s a rare and wonderful thing.

3. Hold a Conversation With Someone of Any Age

Whether the person you’re talking to is eight or 80, you should be able to hold a meaningful, intentional conversation with them. Remember to ask a lot of questions, be more interested in who they are than in who you are, and strive to make their day.

4. Parallel Park

Nothing menial about it, and not nearly as hard as it looks. Practice a little. Become an expert. Dazzle your friends.

5. Defend Your Media Choices

Whether you like Kendrick, Kings of Leon or Ke$ha, you should be able to articulate why. The media we consume affects us, and you should be able to explain to yourself why you’re listening, watching and reading the things that you are.

6. Limit Your Online Life

This cannot be over-emphasized. The inability to manage an online presence has toppled promising careers and made fools out of otherwise competent individuals. You should have a good grip on how often you use social media and what you’re using it for. If you find most of your free time spent on the Internet, it’s time to make some choices. If you’re checking your phone at every awkward pause, delete that Facebook app.

7. Approach a Stranger

Whether it’s for directions, a favor or even just to pass the time on an airplane, knowing how to strike up a conversation out of the blue is a marvelous skill. Ask them questions (don’t lead with information about yourself), be approachable (not aggressive) and look for clues that they’d rather be left alone.

8. Stand Up for Yourself

Whether it’s your boss shooting down an idea before you’ve explained it or a guy shouting rude comments as you’re walking by, you should know how to keep from getting walked over.

9. Say “I Was Wrong”

A relationship squabble. A professional tiff. A theological debate. Whatever it is, you should always be looking for where you might have messed up. “I was wrong” is a magical little sentence that diffuses conflict and brings peace to any situation. You should have it at the top of your go-to phrases.

10. Brew a Great Cup of Coffee or Tea

Look. Once and for all, turning on the coffeemaker and brewing a pot of coffee is totally fine. But you should also be aware how to make a perfect cup of coffee or tea. For yourself. For your friends. Do a little reading. Perfect your technique. It’s a skill you’ll be glad you have forever.

11. Tip Generously

What’s just an extra buck or two to you can completely make your server’s day. Make it a habit to tip generously and, if you’re really feeling daring, write a brief thank you note on your check.

12. Maintain a Mentor

Your twenties are a great time to invest in a mentor. Find someone you want to be like—be it your pastor, a friend or even a peer—and commit to meeting with them regularly. It takes a little humility and a lot of dedication, but there is no ceiling to the value it will add to your life.

13. Bite Your Tongue

Know how to pick your battles. It’s OK for you to be right without getting everyone to admit you’re right. It’s OK for you to be offended by something without everyone knowing you’re offended. Understand when you should go to bat for what you’re thinking and when you can let it go.

14. Stay Well Rested

Late nights will come (if you’ve got kids, they’ll come pretty frequently) but our generation has forgotten the value in a good night’s sleep. Push yourself to go to bed earlier. Utilize your downtime wisely. Resting is just as important as being productive. In fact, you’ll be more productive if you are resting well and often.

15. Respond to Criticism

Defending yourself against criticism is easy. Graciously accepting it is harder, but the improvements it can make to your life and work are wild. Remember that criticism usually isn’t meant to be a personal attack and, if you can learn to take it in the spirit it’s offered, people will have fewer things to criticize you about in the future.

16. Write a Cover Letter

Filling out an application is a pretty simple process but, in all likelihood, the job you really want is going to take more than a list of references and previous employers. Cover letters require some effort, but it can be the difference between “don’t call us, we’ll call you” and “when can you start?”

17. Be Alone

The Millennial generation prizes community, which is very good, but it tends to come at the cost of fearing loneliness. The truth is, being alone can do you a lot of good. Be able to sit quietly—reading, writing, praying or just listening to the silence—and use that time to truly evaluate how your spirit is. Loneliness is exercise for your heart. Do it regularly.

Know the difference between what’s urgent and what’s important, and know which one matters more.

18. Recommend a Book, Movie or Album

It’s harder than it sounds. It’s easy to sound like a pretentious snob or a gushing fan when you’re telling someone to check out something you love. Be able to explain not only why you love something, but why you think someone else would love it.

19. Prioritize the Important Over the Urgent

There are two types of demands on your life. The first and easiest to focus on are the urgent: paying your rent, getting ahead in work, etc. The second and much harder to tackle are the important: your spiritual life, your relationship with your family and looking after the health of your soul. Know the difference between what’s urgent and what’s important, and know which one matters more.

20. Hold on to a Good Friend

There’s going to be a lot of transition in your twenties as both you and your friends float from job to job and location to location. You’ll have to say a lot of good bye’s in the midst of it all, but you should know when you’ve found the rare friend who you don’t want to lose, and you should be able to prioritize staying in touch with them beyond the occasional text message.

I stumbled on this post and decided to share. What’s your current score over twenty?

On BBM, Gamecase and $100000 windfall

Morning people, You’re reading a blog post by a proud winner of $100,000. How do you feel? I’m sure you’re feeling really honored, aren’t you? I should be hyperventilating shey? lol.  I woke up this morning to find the good news in my mail. Apparently, all I needed to win was just my email address. My email address won me approximately 165 million, talk about a dope email address.

osheey! Millonaire! 🙂

Microsoft Corporation World Lottery? Okay. Folks will just sit down in front of their laptop and decide to make their fellow human sad ehn. why? early in the morning? why? who did i offend? *sigh. I know its September and boys are looking for who to scam so they can travel to the village at the end of the year and oppress everyone, but hey, who falls for this sh*t anymore? You have to be creative now. if you really want to scam, get employed by MTN. I sincerely don’t understand what happens to all the airtime on my phone, and GLO too. Unless you can convince me that paying N3000 for 1gb is not a scam.

As predicted in my previous post (view here), barely a week after Apple’s event, RIM is making  BBM available on Android and iphone. The android version would be available on Saturday while the iPhone version will be available on Sunday. You can view details here. I really don’t care, but this has created a lot of buzz so I’ll just leave it out here -___-

Also, I just stumbled on Gamecase, a game controller for iOS7. According to Cnet, The Bluetooth device, which will allegedly have its own battery supply, has dual analog stick support, a directional pad, and four buttons situated below what looks like an on/off switch. On the back, the controller sports an impressive set of dual bumpers and triggers above rubberized grips for a controller layout that seems surprisingly capable when compared with the home console offerings of Microsoft and Sony. Dope yh? I haven’t even downloaded iOS 7. However, it seems the new trend is to post pictures of the new iOS on Instagram and Twitter . I’m not sure I understand the logic behind that.

iOS 7! tension them 😦

A post was supposed to go up on Monday but a brother hasn’t been in the right state of mind. It took quite a struggle to write this tbh. Have a good day. Stay scheming.

Aftermath Of Apple’s Event plus ‘Twitter Reactions’

The iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c launched yesterday. I was going to just come here and write about the launch but I don’t see the point . Every blog, website, newspaper has probably written about that. If you don’t know about the new i Phones then I don’t understand you to be honest. Are you under a rock or something? How are yoy reading this right now? I can’t wrap my head around that. However, just because I’m nice, you can read about that here and here. Rather than write about what you should already know, I’m writing about reactions to the launch. It has been crazy.

Nokia teased Apple for Imitating Lumia With iPhone 5C:

Nokia vs Apple

LOOL. My best reaction tbh

Moreover, there’s this complain that the iphone 5c is too cheap! *sigh* You folks are going to make these girls be like:

Random girl: Is that the iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c.

Me: iPhone 5c.

Random girl: mstchhhew…rubbish, You cant even buy 5s, shame on you.

*sigh am I buying the phone because of you. You folks are causin a ruckus with your opinions. I know most  Nigerians like to follow trends even if it’s going to bore a hole in their pockets. steady buying phones because of everything else but the actual features it provides. This world has ended, God hasn’t just notified us yet.

Also, the iPhone 5 owners have suddenly become obsolete since apple discontinued the production of the iPhone 5, though the price has suddenly increased on Amazon. From a Nigerian view point, if you have an iphone 5, you’re in the dark ages. I’m sorry bro. The S4 is still the smartphone of the year, if you have money and you want to splurge on something worthy, the S4 is the phone for you. Gospel truth brethren! However, as an apple fan boy, you can also get one of these new iPhones. but don’t break the bank, if you cant afford the iPhone 5s . Dont kill yourself, just buy the iPhone 5c and relax. Ya dig?  The iPhone 5s is just a little catch-up with very little innovation.

There are are also mixed reactions to the fingerprint scanner and people are linking it to the Illuminati, the Antichrist illuminati. Na wa, everything is Illuminati these days.

Personally, the worst reaction that I saw about the apple event is that someone said “When you can upgrade to iOS 7. Why buy another phone. Izzi just for Kpali?”. I find that very disturbing to be honest. It’s a new phone for Christ sake! Don’t you understand what a new phone means? new features! You can’t do fingerprint sensor if you only upgrade your ios, can you? The struggle to form tech savvy. nah, aint about that life. if you upgrade your iOS, is your phone suddenly going to have colors? Most of the features wont work effectively with your phone, that’s why its a new operating system. What is wrong with you people? it’s not like a laptop that you can just wipe your operating system and install windows 8 and you will be enjoying the full package. You can’t enjoy the new iOS on ‘lesser’ phones. Don’t piss me off.

advil_tainsville

*sigh* btw the sensor can recognize multiple fingerprints

ephh_tainsville

Lol. I’m guessing the A stands for America

Kevinhart_tainsville

I wonder how true this is

If you like this post, kindly share. I would normally do the whole twitter sharing but i’m working on borrowed time here and I have a meeting. Stop sharing only those posts about how wizkid woke up this morning or how Donjazzy bought a new toothbrush.  Subscribe to my blog, grab the rss feed, show some love…hehe…

Have a good day, Stay scheming.

On ASUU, Google Cloud Developer Challenge and Iphone 5s

The ASUU strike is now 70 days old. Last time there was an ASUU strike this long, lasted for 3 months actually, I resumed to find that three of my buddies had already changed schools. Imagine. They just left the country without taking a brother along. This life is just a pot of baked beans, no? just a pot? or a pot of boiling water? *sigh. Now, I’m wondering what’s in store for me this time lol.  I’m hoping the strike ends before November and if it doesn’t, they should just award my Bsc. and let me go. I’ll take my current CGPA and walk out of the gate with my head held high. A brother has plans you know. I don’t intend to grow white hair while waiting for ASUU and the FG to resolve issues.

Asuu strike

I should have just gone to Covenant 😥

There are pros though. I have time for my blog now and some other personal development stuff. I have been exercising too. Thanks to Sworkit.  I’ll probably write a post on how best to spend your ASUU strike. *fingers crossed*. Moreover, I’m thinking of buying out my domain. I have decided that If I posts at least two post per week till the end of September then I will, else, I will just leave it as it is. If the strike ends this month, that would definitely put paid to that, because I really won’t have time to come here and write stuff.

In more heartwarming news, The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are due tomorrow!!!! Can i get an hallelujah somebody?! Personally, I feel the S4 is still the phone of the year and there’s nothing Apple can do about that.  There’s a lot of buzz and leaks. There’s the  whole fingerprint sensor rumor and a new ios obviously, which is expected to be crazy. You can read on what to expect here and here. I also believe BBM for iOS will be launching tomorrow although no one has said anything about that yet.

Rumored iPhone 5s

Rumored iPhone 5s. looking dope already ^_^

I am not exactly excited about BBm for iOS. I have no plans to download it,  if it is made available on the 5.1, 6.0. and the likes. I like the idea of not waking up to 20 broadcast messages on my phone of various random stuff that I’m not interested in. I plan to stick with my Whatsapp. I feel Whatsapp is bbm for ios already. The only thing wrong with Whatsapp is the last seen time stamp and that’s even trivial.  However, I know that a lot of people are excited about BBM on iOS. There’s no doubting that it’s going to be dope!

Also, the response to my double posts on Blackdistrikt was quite encouraging.  It is currently my third most viewed post. My most viewed post is actually one random stuff I wrote when i was feeling in-touch with my emotional side. View here. Till today, it is still getting hits even though I have read it again and I’m not sure why it’s getting all the attention. I’m really hoping to figure it out so I can apply the same ideology to my other posts lol.

Finally, there’s the Google cloud developer challenge with more than three million up for grabs. View here. I’m just putting this here so someone can see this and if they win they can say they read it on this blog first lol. Slim chance yh? I know but I have included it notwithstanding lol. There are still some things I’m trying to figure out about the challenge, I’ll probably do a little reading and write a full post about it.

Wish you all a very good week. Stay scheming.

Life is a journey…where the hell are you going?

Where_on_life_journey

Do you remember?

You had dreams

You wanted to go places

You wanted to do stuff

And there was more…

You were creative

You explored

You even had a business

So what happened?

You met ‘reality’

You were not good enough

They made fun of your dreams

Study hard = get a job

You grew up

Got a job

Paid the bills

Watched ‘reality’ on TV…

Is this really what you want?

Running even faster

Feeling more pressure

Exhausted?

Let’s fast forward…

Top three regrets of the dying…

I did not spend enough time with the people I love

I did not do work that I really enjoy

I did not make a difference

Hmmm…

Nothing about money, iPad, or watching TV…

Seriously, life is too short

Baga Village 2013

Baga Massacre

Nassarawa Cult killings 2013

Nassarawa Cult killings

Woolwich 2013

Woolwich murder suspect

It’s not too late (if you’re reading this)

Ask yourself these three questions…

What do I really enjoy doing?

Who do I want to be around?

How can I make a difference?

Did you answer the questions?

Really?

Write down the answers

Done?

Now go do it!

One more thing…

So what are you willing to do?

Life is a journey

Conversation with Aramide

tainsville.wordpress.com

Last year, same date, same horrid harmattan, Just when I was preparing to come visit you…I got that ill-fated call of your demise.

I had to receive visitors. Twas just me, the others were away, and the parents. I stood there with tear-stained eyes as people tried to console us. I wanted to tell them it was futile, that they should keep their bible quotes and ‘afmag’ lines to themselves but I just stared into space.
I remember someone warning me not to cut myself off from people. She had lost someone she loved and I had tried to play the role she now found herself playing. People have tried to be ‘there’ for me…instead I found the shell I lost in my early teens.

Going back to school was hard, I wasn’t ready. staying off school was definitely my best bet. First day in school and I was already breaking down. I saw you-know-who, the one I said reminded me of you from back in secondary school. As I stood there, exchanging pleasantries, I had to fight back the force threatening to unmask my emotions. I made a quick escape. she didn’t notice. I think I successfully masked it all after that slip, i wasn’t interested in anyone’s sympathy.
My grades suffered a bit that semester, more like a loss in focus really. I just couldn’t see why i had to work my ass off if i couldn’t control the one thing that guaranteed tomorrow, life itself.

After a while people forget your loss, its okay…but it becomes annoying when they expect you to forget too. Throwing myself into my career has been helpful in keeping my mind occupied, though they say its too early to decide what your career is in my field…i’m enjoying the present challenge. I still wonder if somehow you hinted me over ice-cream the day before while we made plans that your time was up. Maybe you had tried to warn me somehow that i was seeing you for the last time and i would have to make do without a sister for my remaining days.
I miss you.

Goodbye 2012

tainsville.wordpress.com

Hello good people, I promised y’all a post. This is actually an end of the year rant. The world didn’t come to an end after-all😃

Its been a crazy year with more lows than highs. Career-wise, I have become more enthusiastic about programming, especially web programming, and technology as a whole. I have developed a couple of apps: photo sharing( I did only two major functionalities) like pin-interest, instant messenger( single client), payroll etc. I also got an invite to write on a tech site. I’ll be sharing the links on here too.

I have a couple of things I want to change on this blog, starting from the interface to the content. I’ll probably just design one. I haven’t really done what birthed this blog, but its just been my first year and I wasn’t expecting miracles.

Emotionally, naah…this isn’t a diary, I never even had a diary, personal stuffs should remain so. It accounts for the the higher number of drafts compared to actual posts. I put too much of myself in those drafts. Maybe, I wont mind in 2013.

Thanks to those who have been reading my inconsistent attempt at blogging, and of course! thanks for the referrals! this is hoping I’ll be consistent next year. Wishing y’all a good year, stay scheming.

I’m posting this from my mobile, not sure how it would turn out.
